The Amalfi drive, a 30-mile stretch of narrow coastal road running between Sorrento and Vietri (near Salerno), is famous for its hairpin turns and spectacular Mediterranean views! This winding jagged coast, formed by the constant rush of the emerald-to-sapphire sea, is dotted with deep ravines, medieval watchtowers and climbing pastel-colored fishing villages. The island of Capri, with its intriguing grottos and deep emerald bays, has attracted the powerful and wealthy since the Romans. Romantic Sorrento, with Vesuvius looming in the background, is home to a well-known 16th century poet and a famous 20th century Italian tenor. The village of Positano is one of the region’s most picturesque; the town of Amalfi has the most magnificent cathedral and Ravello has the some of the region’s most splendid gardens with panoramic Mediterranean views (Greta Garbo escaped the glare of the world’s press in the 1930s at a famous villa housed at the center of one of these historic gardens). Which scenic villages make the most convenient bases, which are the best hotels with the most magnificent Mediterranean views and which vine-covered terraces offer the best panoramas and local cuisine? We traveled anonymously to Amalfi to find out! Subscribers may also want to consider the issues on Rome, Florence, Tuscany and Umbria .   More Issues
