Barcelona is a lively and vibrant city with a warm Mediterranean climate and a lovely seaside setting. The city is probably best known for its fanciful and revolutionary collection of buildings created by late 19th century architect Antonio Gaudi, many of which have been designated Unesco World Heritage Sites. However, since so much has been written about Gaudi, his unique architecture and his close association with the city, many visitors are surprised to find that Barcelona also has a magnificent Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic), complete with narrow winding streets, scenic squares and exquisite medieval architecture. This issue of The European Traveller wanders through Barcelona’s most interesting neighborhoods and most fascinating historic sites. Where are the best hotels, which restaurants offer the best value and which of the many Gaudi buildings should be visited first? We traveled to Barcelona anonymously to find out. Travellers to Barcelona may also want to consider the issues on the Costa Brava, Provence and Paris.
