BORDEAUX
Vol. 15, No. 3 France
January / February 2010

Bordeaux, one of France's great wine producing regions, has the country's largest concentration of world-class vineyards. The city of Bordeaux is the cultural, economic, and transportation center for southwest France, but the region's real jewels are the quaint, historic village of St-Emilion and the prestigious premier grand cru vineyards of the Medoc. St-Emilion was designated a World Heritage Site for its magnificently preserved medieval village and outstanding historic vineyard landscape. These vineyards have survived intact for centuries and still produce some of the country's finest wines. The Medoc is home to Bordeaux' finest and most expensive wines, including Chateau Margaux; Chateau Latour; Chateau Lafite-Rothschild (the French side of the family); and Mouton-Rothschild (the English side of the family). Visits to these world-famous chateaux must be planned well in advance. This issue of The European Traveller features the best of the premiers crus tours, valuable tips for uncovering the best of St-Emilion and the most ideal way to navigate the city of Bordeaux. The issue also highlights the regions best country house chateaux hotels (and which rooms are best) as well as the most intriguing dining spots with lovely terraces, great views and wonderfully prepared regional specialties. Since the TGV (France's high speed train) is only three hours north to Paris and the same distance south to St-Jean-de-Luz (Basque Region), subscribers may also want to consider the issues on the Basque, Paris and the next issue on the Dordogne (about an hour by car).   More Issues
