Lucca and Pisa, along with Florence and Siena, are Tuscany’s most important cities. Lucca is an intriguing walled town with scenic pedestrian alleys lined with centuries-old noble houses that open onto small squares with magnificent churches. Pisa is best known for its beautiful and dramatic piazza showcasing its splendid cathedral and world-famous leaning tower. The region is also famous for the beautiful snowy-white marble from Carrara, extracted from the surrounding caves since ancient time. All of the Italian Renaissance masters used Carrara marble, including Michelangelo, who used the newly opened 16th century caves in Carrara (many open to the public and still actively used for quarrying marble today) to create many of his most famous sculptures, including the David (Florence). Which villa hotels are most charming, which neighborhood trattorias have the best food and selection of great Tuscan wines and which sights should not be missed? This issue of The European Traveller uncovers the best of these famous historic towns and villages. Travellers to Lucca, Pisa and West Tuscany may also want to consider the back issues on Florence, The Italian Lakes, Venice, Emilia-Romagna, Portofino, Umbria, Tuscany and Amalfi.
