Aix-en-Provence is one of the region's largest and most famous Provencal towns and, along with the Vaucluse (the region named for the famous warm springs at Fontaine de Vaucluse), is one of Provence’s most popular destinations. This sun-kissed region of southern France is famous for its vine-covered farmhouses with thick masonry walls, picturesque villages that gracefully tumble down steep plateaus and endless fields of lavender. The captivating town of Aix, home of Impressionist painter Paul Cezanne, is a tangled maze of winding cobbled streets, small fountains and stunning stone mansions mellowed by centuries of sun. Paul Cezanne was born in Aix and spent his later years painting the area in and around Aix. This issue of The European Traveller wanders Aix's narrow streets, colorful markets and most intriguing sights including the hillside studio that Cezanne had built to his own personal specifications. The issue then travels along the scenic road to Gordes and the fascinating villages in and around Gordes, including the hillside village of Bonnieux, the scarlet village of Roussillon, and the rushing emerald natural springs at Fontaine de Vaucluse. The beautiful 12th century Senanque Abbey, sitting serenely in a field of lavender, and the famous Sunday morning market at L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, the largest antiques market outside of Paris, are also in the issue. The European Traveller narrows down the endless list of confusing options to the few most charming villa hotels with the best locations, values and views; the most authentic restaurants with the best regional cuisine; and the most optimal way to navigate the sights. Subscribers may also be interested in the issues on Provence-Avignon, the Provence Sampler and the upcoming issue on Paris.
