THE BASQUE
Vol. 15, No. 2 Spain / France
November / December 2009

The Basque, one of Europe's oldest civilizations, is a fascinating region located at the western end of the Pyrenees along the border of Spain and France. The region is famous for its original and spirited cuisine, its diverse landscape and its unique attractions. The intriguing Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao still holds the Spanish record for the most visitors in a single day (more than 9,000) and the magnificent Gothic cathedral at Burgos is known for its vast size and unique architecture. The historic fishing village of St-Jean-de-Luz makes a quaint and convenient base for visiting the region's villages, as well as the larger, more famous coastal resorts of San Sebastian (Spain) and Biarritz (France). Pamplona is internationally famous for the running with the bulls, which takes place during the annual San Fermin Festival in July. This issue of The European Traveller highlights the Basque's most interesting market towns, villages and historic sights. Also included are the best historic hotels (and rooms); the region's world-famous chefs; and the best spot for "pinchos". This issue also features important travel tips, including the best way to avoid the outrageous $500 car rental drop-off fee when picking the car up in Spain and dropping it off in France (or vice-versa). Bordeaux (next issue) is just three hours on the TGV (France's high speed train). Subscribers may also want to consider the issue on Madrid and the upcoming issues on Bordeaux and the Dordogne.   More Issues
