Rome may be Italy's capital, but Tuscany is its heart. This golden region of Italy, famous for its olive groves, cypress trees and scenic hillsides covered with vineyards, hasn't changed much since the Middle Ages. Tuscany is dotted with magnificent Romanesque Abbeys and its hilltops are crowned with walled medieval villages that hide a wealth of important art treasures from the medieval period and the Renaissance. This issue of The European Traveller highlights the region's most important medieval towns and scenic vineyard trails. Siena, a magnificent unique Gothic gem, is famous for its beautiful cathedral, historic town hall and annual Palio. San Gimignano, Tuscany's most popular medieval village, is famous for its dramatic hilltop location and soaring medieval towers. The Chianti wine region is known for its scenic vineyard roads and delicious Chianti Classico. The Tuscan wines are some of Italy's best, especially the famous vino Nobiles from Montepulciano (with its magnificent Renaissance square) and the Brunellos from Montalcino (with its splendid panoramas). The issue also features the region's most charming hotels and centuries-old villas with the best locations, values and views; the trattorias and wine bars with the most authentic cuisine and intriguing regional wines; and valuable tips for maximizing the historic sights. Subscribers may also be interested in the issues on Umbria, Florence, Lucca, Pisa and West Tuscany, Rome, Amalfi and the Italian Lakes.
