VERONA & LAKE GARDA
Vol. 17, No. 2 Italy
November / December 2011
|
Although the sights and atmosphere in Verona and Lake Garda promote completely different types of vacations, their proximity and shared history make them a natural to combine for a visit. Verona, an easy 90-minute ride from Venice by train, has the best-preserved Roman Amphitheater in the world (begun 30 A.D.), second only to Rome’s Colosseum in size and importance. Each summer, the amphitheater is used to stage the elaborate operas for Verona’s world-famous summer opera season, which will celebrate its centennial next year! Verona also has a splendid medieval castle, a magnificent castle bridge, several beautiful medieval squares and countless medieval houses with decorative stone balconies. The city is the setting for Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, and a number of buildings mentioned in the play still exist.
Nearby Lake Garda, largest of the northern Italian Lakes, is just 40 minutes from Verona by car. (Special note: take the train to Verona, where everything is easily reached on foot, and pick up a car for travel to Garda). The southern villages are some of the most scenic and those along the northern tier are quite different. Many of these historic lakeside villages are dotted with quaint medieval castles and small churches dating from the Roman period. The scenery is simply spectacular. This issue of The European Traveller will guide you to the most interesting and scenic villages; the hotels with the best location, value and views, and the restaurants with the most traditional cuisine. The issue also provides valuable tips including the best time to travel, the best way to travel (boat or car?) and the most ideal way to maximize relaxation (and shopping) time. Subscribers may also be interested in the issues on Venice, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria, and the upcoming issues on Florence and Rome.
